50% Student Reduction Extended to Commercial Operators

Kilkenny Students benefit from 50% reduction extended to private operators

Students in Kilkenny to benefit from 50% reduction on commercial bus operators

The Green Party have welcomed the extension of the 50% fare reduction for all young people under-24 to commercial operators from this week, starting 5th September.

This follows on from the 50% reduction for under-24s and 20% reduction in fares for all public transport commuters.

Making public transport cheaper and more accessible is a key Green Party objective in a government and this initiative will help many students attending university this term.

Green Party Cllr Maria Dollard said:

“There are many costs racking up on students at the minute. Unfortunately, for many, transport costs are a big part of that.

“That’s why I’m really glad to see the extension of the half price fares to private as well as public transport operators.

“It is really critical that we make sure we start to effectively promote and encourage the right kind of transport where possible – and that is walking, cycling and public transport, in that order.

Green Party Spokesperson for Transport Brian Leddin said:

“Making public transport cheaper for young people is an important way to cut costs for students. The Green Party are delivering fare reductions in government that will have a positive impact as people return to education.

“The slashed fares have three advantages - they save young people money, they help make public and shared transport a more attractive travel choice and by choosing public or shared transport, young commuters are playing a vital part in reducing our overall emissions from transport.”

The half price young adult fare commenced on May 9th on all subsidised public transport journeys on Dublin Bus, Iarnród Éireann, Bus Éireann, Luas, Go-Ahead Ireland and TFI Local Link. From this week commercial bus operators will also have the reduced fares for young people available.

The May fare reductions were among the measures unveiled as part of a government package to reduce the cost of living.

New bill to combat high electricity costs welcomed by Kilkenny Councillor by Liam Kelly O’Rourke Kilkenny People 01 Sep 2023 4:48 PM Kilkenny Green Party Councillor, Maria Dollard, has welcomed the publication of the Energy (Windfall Gains in the Energy Sector) (Cap on Market Revenues) Bill. The Bill provides a cap on the market revenues genered by non-gas generators in the wholesale electricity market between December 2022 to June 2023. The estimated proceeds from the cap on market revenues are in the range €80 million to €150 million and these will now be retained and used in the electricity sector to provide financial supports to households and businesses affected by high energy prices. Cllr Dollard, commented: "This is good news for Kilkenny consumers who will see the money collected ring fenced to be returned to consumers who have been paying way too much for electricity for a long time now. We need to support those on the lowest incomes. There’s no doubt some people are being hit harder than others and without access to good insulation, bills can be very high for some, especially older people and people with reduced mobility." Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan, claimed the move would 'ease the impact of high energy prices on electricity consumers' and stated he intends to bring this Bill through the Houses of the Oireachtas when the Dáil resumes after the summer recess. https://www.kilkennypeople.ie/news/local-news/1287190/new-bill-to-combat-high-electricity-costs-welcomed-by-kilkenny-councillor.html
